Bachelor of Engineering in Information Technology

The Bachelor of Engineering in Information Technology (BE IT) aims to develop Information Technology Professionals with specializations in Networking, Software Engineering or Information Security who will be able to contribute to the development of computing technology in the country through Research, Innovation, Creativity and Enterprise with ethical and professional responsibility. 

The Bachelor of Engineering in Information Technology was first reviewed in June 2016 and the reviewed programme is implemented starting July 2016. To maintain the relevancy of the programme, minor reviews are carried out whenever required and periodic major review is carried out every complete cycle of the programme. The second review is due and currently, the review is in process.

The programme aims to achieve the following learning outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the BE IT programme, graduates will be able to:
  • solve computing problems using mathematics and scientific methods.
  • apply network engineering concepts and solutions to plan, design, implement and manage the computer network infrastructure and system services
  • implement information security and networking concepts.
  • develop software following different architectural designs.
  • evaluate the professional and ethical issues
  • assess legal and social issues in the IT field.
  • work in a multi-disciplinary environment and communicate effectively.
  • conduct a literature review and perform small scale research in the IT field.
The programme is offered under the Information Technology (IT) Department in the College. The Information Technology (IT) department was offering only ICT services to the College until the current programme was launched in 2010. In July 2010, the first batch of 20 students was enrolled in the programme and 15 out of 20 students graduated in 2014. As of June 2021, 224 students graduated with the Bachelor of Engineering in Information Technology and currently, there are 174 students enrolled in the first year to the fourth year.

Apart from offering a BE IT programme, the department is involved in other activities. In the year 2013, the IT department took part in the South Asia Sub-region Economy Cooperation( SASEC) project, specifically the Research and Training Network (RTN) component. All deliverables and activities of the project had been completed and commissioned. The SASEC-RTN Project was for 2 years and was completed at the end of the year 2015. The department is currently undertaking the Asi@Connect project titled “Implementation of e-Learning and its associated Capacity Building for identified schools in Bhutan '' until December 2021.

Keeping pace with the growth, Government has a mission to provide e-government services across all gewogs. Demand for technically more competent personals and comprehensive handling of the ICT with reliability is increasing tremendously. This necessitates the Bachelor of Engineering in Information Technology, which obviously is an easily identifiable national professional and training needs.

Recent advancement in the field of Information and Communication Technology has made a huge impact to everyone’s life. A mobile phone or internet access has no more remained a luxury service and is becoming a routine usable item and slowly becoming a necessity.

This change has created a huge demand for qualified technocrats in this field. With all these, the college had started offering Bachelor of Engineering in Information Technology in the academic year 2010-2011.

Globally, the Information Technology fields represent one of the fastest growing technologies in service industries. The graduates with Information Technology grounding will find employment in any organization as they are the key person involved in making ICT happen. With the rapid progress of the ICTization in the kingdom, the role of IT graduate is becoming crucial for everyday activities. IT graduates will find employment in both private and government sector within and outside Bhutan, and some could even be self-employed.

Students will also have an opportunity to experience aspects of the IT profession by making short visits to various IT agencies and Industries. Regular workshops and seminars shall be organized in the college where speakers from different industries, related government officials, and academicians from colleges and universities in India and abroad shall be invited. The student’s shall also be sent for industrial training at different IT industries and organizations for a period of 6 weeks in the pre-final semester. Upon graduation, outstanding students shall be offered an opportunity to pursue higher studies.
